The Essence of the Apulian Lifestyle
Ever since childhood summers in the Mediterranean I’ve been bewitched with the freedom and energy of a seamless blend of no boundaries, the indoor outdoor lifestyle. So much so, I recreated it on my Manhattan rooftop. There were limitless entertainments and relaxations on that west village corner. We took showers under the star studded skies and snoozed on the wooden Balinese daybed. I even grew voluptuous tomatoes and eggplants, herbs, strawberries, and gorgeous roses. I loved waking up to the sound of the birds and the weeping willow sweeping in the summer breeze in the neighbor’s courtyard.
Now many years later I have taken it a bit further, farther down to southern Italy. A region called Puglia, my haven of relaxation, where the color of landscape merges with clean lines of dreamy interiors. The harmony of this lifestyle truly reflects the essence of my personality.
I love waking up to the serenity of morning in the countryside and the scent of freshly washed linens line-dried under the sun and stepping directly on the terrace with stunning views over an intimate valley full of the olive trees, ancient trulli, and beyond to the rolling green Apulian farmlands. Breathing the fresh Mediterranean country air and the magical sound of the birds I then do my cat poses in the midst of scented lavender bushes.
Lazily walking over to the pool for a swim and a morning kiss from the sun, then finishing off with an outdoor shower of harvested rainwater is pure bliss. The tranquil atmosphere and earthy tones and palette of the surrounding countryside maintain my health and inner balance.
There is always a fruit tree bearing breakfast. I love exploring and foraging my land for things to eat. Grapes, olives, figs, almonds, cherries, apricots, wild asparagus, whatever may be in season. Everywhere around you there are fields of rosemary, bay, and other heavenly scented herbs with a tangle of wisteria and jasmine here and there under the pergola.
Gorgeous outdoor rooms with flowers and secret nooks, suddenly become an indoor room. It makes the house very flexible. Some days I hardly go inside, except to sleep. We cook and take all our meals on the veranda and lounge in its sun dappled spaces. Being able to spend so much time outdoors is one of Puglia’s blessings. Inside the house is very cool on hot days, thanks to the very thick stone walls and ubiquitous Puglian whitewashing. People sublimely live in harmony with the climate down here, the ideal habitat and style.
The most beautiful things in life are not things, they are feelings and moments. To experience this lifestyle, let me offer you a gorgeous property for your stay.
